Headlights move along the pavement. Storefront signs cast light across the sidewalks. Pools of light gather beneath streetlamps, with deeper shadows between them beneath palms and building facades. Cyclists cross the intersections. Golf carts idle at the curb. Groups step out from restaurants and walk toward the beach or farther down the avenue.
Flagler Avenue runs east toward the Atlantic, though the ocean is not always visible from the street. Humidity hangs in the air. Wind moves the palm fronds. At intervals, the sound of surf carries beneath the traffic and voices.
